What matters when you buy
- Pole feeders about 5 ft up, at least 10 ft from shrubs, trees or other tall structures; cone baffle at least 17 in wide below the feeder (Audubon feeding guidelines, 2011). (Audubon)

Do squirrel-proof feeders really work?
Weight-activated feeders close the ports when a squirrel's weight lands on the perch and work well against grey squirrels. Makers state they don't stop small rodents, starlings or raccoons, and placement still matters.
Where should I hang a squirrel-proof feeder?
About 5 feet up on a pole with a baffle, at least 8–10 feet from trees, fences or roofs squirrels can jump from.
What food keeps squirrels away?
Safflower is unpopular with most squirrels, but some learn to eat it. It works best together with a baffle.
