Bird bath

Bird baths and heated bird baths

In winter, open water can bring more birds than food. Heated baths keep it ice-free with a thermostat; shallow basins suit small songbirds all year.

Buying criteria

What matters when you buy

  • Heated baths use a thermostat so they only heat near freezing: API 970 holds water at 40–50 °F; Farm Innovators BD-75 switches on at 35 °F. (jcswildlife.com)
  • Heater power in this set ranges from 70 W (API Four Seasons 14 in) to 150 W (20 in baths); stand-alone de-icers go up to 250 W (API BDT250). (jcswildlife.com)
  • Open water in winter draws birds when natural sources are frozen (Birds & Blooms, search snippet). (Birds & Blooms)
  • Solar pumps need direct sun; models with backup battery (AquaNura IntelliSOLAR) keep running in cloud. (Duncraft)
  • Ceramic fountains must be protected from freezing (Smart Solar koi); Sunnydaze glaze is labelled frost-resistant. (Duncraft)
  • Shallow bowls: most baths here are 1.25–2.5 in deep (maker data), matching the 'gradual slope' design API describes. (jcswildlife.com)

Questions

Bird baths and heated bird baths: questions

Do birds need water in winter?

Yes. Birds drink and bathe in winter too, and a heated bath is often the only open water around after a hard frost.

Are heated bird baths safe?

Models sold for birds use a thermostat that only heats near freezing, so the water stays cool. Use an outdoor-rated cord and keep the bath shallow.

How deep should a bird bath be?

Shallow – about 1 to 2 inches, with a gently sloping edge so small birds can stand in it.
